DANNY FEEDBACK

Straight Out of Cockeysville (Published in aXis Magazine 2005)

Have you ever had an experience that left you with the feeling of being slightly frightened and strangely aroused at the same time? Then afterwards, did you feel a bit twisted for taking pleasure in something that was kind of dirty... no? OK then, neither have I. Well that is until I recently saw Danny Feedback at The Peacock Room. If you've seen them around town, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

The alchemy of Ryan Cox (bassist/vocals), Dan Preston Esquire (guitar/ vocals), and Waylon Thornton (drums) create a trio of pure determination and excitement. They have their minds set on one thing... to shockingly entertain their audience.

"I want people to be in awe of the entertainment value of our stage show. When they come they will see something that they have never seen before: three musicians that will fuck anything to entertain the crowd and play better than anyone they have ever seen before," says Cox.
They tend to lure their fans into the doors with promises of women making out on stage and cross-dressing Preston humping pieces of gear. They then keep them there with catchy guitar riffs, impressive song writing, and genuine musicianship.

"I'm not just humping everything. When I hump the guitar (which is usually either a Mexican made Telecaster or a Stratocaster) it is usually about two inches away from the amp, which makes feedback to make different kinds of sounds," says Preston.

Where does all the love for antics and noise come from and why does it work so well for these gentlemen? Cox seems to think that Preston, originally from Cockeysville, Maryland, "can be a trashy, flashy sex God that plays a ridiculous guitar. We also have one of the most talented drummers around. We're not just playing whiny garbage. We're not really trying to be that deep. We're just playing music that is an extension of ourselves and how fucking cool we are."
Their stage show creates an excitement that is quite rare for Orlando.

"Playing in this band is so much fun. With the over the top stage antics, it is fun to almost be pompous, consciously confident, and to let our egos go over the top. It is all part of the fun. We almost create a border line parity of rock star-ism," says Thornton.

While each of them are quite young and attractive in a somewhat disturbing and overtly sexual way, they each bring quite different aspects to the mix. Thornton, one time drummer for the bombastic metal band Fatality, began piano lessons when he was five, and started playing drums when he was twelve. His drumming has a strong resemblance to jazz artists such as Buddy Rich and has a technical yet very smooth style.

"I've always been pretty motivated to play music, because of my mom's side of the family. When I was younger I was also always influenced by guys like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings," says Thornton.

Cox, being drawn to artists like Elvis and The Butthole Surfers, began playing bass in 2002 and has learned mostly from Preston. They both played in the psychedelic-punk band Hippy Gone Wrong. Preston started his musical career at the age of twelve while being the singer of death metal band Tin Foil Buddas, but soon found himself looking for a new gig after being kicked out for throwing candy at audiences and for his on stage freak outs. Looking for a change he bought an acoustic guitar. Wanting to get out of his home town for a "tropical paradise", he moved Orlando in 1997 and began to broaden his musical horizons. Since then he has been drawn to bands like Ween, Pink Floyd, and Sonic Youth.

While creating songs for Danny Feedback Preston identified with his influences, but tried to take a slightly different route.

"Psychedelic bands are usually down tempo and sometimes a little slower. I wanted to use effects and sounds, but I also wanted a lot of rock with catchy lyrics and guitars," says Preston.
Cox adds, "When you see a lot of local bands, you can pinpoint them exactly to another band. But Danny Feedback is actually something that is unique, original and not watered down," he says.

When I caught up with Danny Feedback for the interview they had just finished playing a set in Asheville, North Carolina. They have been on an East Coast tour, basically to get things moving for them before they take a brief sabbatical. Cox is moving to Syracuse for law school and Thornton may be moving to San Francisco shortly for job purposes. They still plan to record regularly, and are set to play shows in different cities at least twice a month.

Before they leave they will finish up their east coast tour in Orlando at Backbooth on August 13th. They have a self released five song EP and also have had a film crew following their debauchery on tour, which will be released as a DVD later in August. For more information on purchasing them or their other merch you, of course can go to the Backbooth show, or visit them at www.myspace.com/dannyfeedback. Their official site is under construction at the moment.
If you are feeling up to a kick ass rock show, definitely check them out on the 13th. If you keep your eyes and ears open wide enough you will probably think that the three of them are in on some inside sexy, secret joke. If you are willing to pay attention they just may let you in on it.
